On Saturday January 3rd, 2026 at the "Boys &Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas", The Wichita HBCU Alumni Collective presented an "HBCU Panel And Showcase", giving the community a chance to hear personal experiences of former students from Wichita who went to HBCUs, such as Howard, Prairie View, Jackson State ,Spelman  and came back to Kansas to make a difference in the Black Community.

The event hosted by Asia Cymone -Smith Miss Kansas USA and Social Media influencer

D'Aydrian Harding along with members of the "Divine 9" or Black frats and Soros. The towns' Mayor Lily Wu was in attendance along with WPD Police Chief and numerous Government officials . Speed networking exhibits were along the sides of the gym for panelist to give their input, insight and make connections with potential HBCU students.

One student panelist from Howard University spoke on how "God Spoke Howard to her heart". While many of the panelist spoke about their experiences and how leaders in the church community in Wichita inspired them to face the challenges, overcome the obstacles and go for it !!!

On a personal note, the day was marked by celebration for a Wichita native, pioneer, and HBCU Alumni Dr. William "Buggs" Polite, who was honored by receiving the "Key To The City" . Unfortunately, Dr. Polite passed away in 2025, and will be truly missed by the Wichita Community.

I can remember Dr. Polite, who was a very good friend of our family, telling me stories about writing letters back home to Wichita Church leaders asking for funds to help get by, and just like Wichita, they responded, and eventually "Buggs" lead a Department for Wichita Public Schools to help minority students, a Non-profit to help "Protect Your. Mind" and a family in which his daughter is a Principal following in her father's footsteps as an educator.
